Punjab Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Minister Mr Bharat Bhushan Ashu today informed that solar panels would be installed in 25 government schools and two government colleges under the Ludhiana Smart City project. He said that on the completion of this project, these schools and colleges would be fully powered using solar energy, that would not only lead to saving money, but would also contribute in saving our environment by producing green energy.Accompanied by Mayor Mr Balkar Singh Sandhu, Ludhiana Improvement Trust Chairman Mr Raman Balasubramaniam, SDM Ludhiana (West) Mr Amrinder Singh Malhi, DEO Mrs Swaranjit Kaur, PEDA District Manager Mr Anupam Nanda, Mr Karanjit Singh Soni Galib, Mr Sunny Bhalla, Mr Inderjit Singh Indi, Mr Sukhpreet Singh Aulakh, besides others, the Cabinet Minister today visited the Government Senior Secondary Smart School, Punjab Agricultural University, and ongoing projects of Sidhwan Canal Waterfront project and Leisure Valley in BRS Nagar, here.

On this occasion, he also informed that the work of installing solar panels at Government Senior Secondary School, Haibowal Kalan, have also started from today onwards. He said that the total cost of this project is around Rs 4.3 crore and 803 KW of green energy would be produced when this project is completed. He stated that when this project is completed, 10.50 lakh electricity units would be produced each year, that would help in saving around Rs 62 lakh per year, which the schools and colleges earlier paid as electricity charges.Mr Ashu informed that these solar panels would have a life of 25 years and the installation cost would be recovered in 5 years time.Later, the Cabinet Minister also supervised the ongoing work of leisure valley opposite DAV Public School in BRS Nagar and Sidhwan Canal Waterfront Project and issued necessary instructions to the officials. 

He informed that the Sidhwan Canal Waterfront project envisages development of the stretch along the Sidhwan canal, starting from Pakhowal Road till Ludhiana MC Zone D office near Ferozepur Road, as an open public space for citizens of the city. The total cost of this project is Rs 4.75 crore. The total length of this stretch is approximately 1100 metres and the width varies from 20–22 metres.He informed that this project includes developing a green belt, dedicated cycling track, playing zone, dedicated footpath along canal, sitting areas, wall climbing activities etc. In the second phase, Sidhwan Canal (from Pakhowal Road to Dugri Road) would be developed. He further informed that green belts, plus dedicated cycle track on both sides double road along canal, etc would be developed here.He further stated that to provide clean and green environment, place for exercise and spending leisure time for city residents, four Leisure Valleys are being developed in Ludhiana (West) constituency of the city. He informed that near DAV Public School, the leisure valley would be around 1.5 kilometres in length (starting from opposite DAV Public School till Railway Crossing near Pakhowal Road) and with a cost of around Rs 3 crore. He informed that the land for leisure valleys is being provided by the Ludhiana Improvement Trust and Municipal Corporation Ludhiana.He informed that near DAV Public School, the vacant chunk of land was literally being used as a garbage dump. He said that this space would soon be fully transformed into one of the best leisure valley’s of the city. Here, the Municipal Corporation has also constructed a rain water recharging well.Mr Bharat Bhushan Ashu informed that the this project (near DAV Public School) was designed by former students of Horticulture Department of Punjab Agricultural university and the features will be modern infrastructure, benches, canopies,  imported grass, plants, lighting etc. He informed that this leisure valley would also have tennis, badminton and volleyball courts, along with a senior citizen home, an open gym, besides several other facilities.
