With an aim to avoid the gathering of pension beneficiaries outside the banks, the district police on Monday, roped in Village/Ward Police Officers (VPOs) to disburse old-age, handicapped or widow pensions at the doorsteps of beneficiaries.Divulging the details, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mansa Dr Narinder Bhargav said that recently banks were allowed to continue working in the larger public interest which led to huge rush of pensioners outside the banks, resulting in diluting the purpose of social distancing amid the pandemic of Corona Virus (COVID-19).Keeping in view such situation, Dr Bhargav said that the Mansa Police planned to depute VPOs to help the banks in disbursing the pension through the biometric system at concerned villages. VPOs will be in addition to the business correspondents and bank staff deputed already by banks to disburse the pensions. Following the directions of SSP Dr Bhargav, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mansa Harjinder Singh on Monday, started the disbursement of pensions himself by handing over a pension amount to the 87-years-old man at his doorstep at village Tamkot. DSP Harjinder was accompanied by Burj Hari village Sarpanch Rajpal Singh and VPO Kulwinder Singh, Tamkot village Sarpanch Gurnam Singh and VPO Harjinder Singh.SSP Dr Bhargav further said that the initiative will not only reduce the crowd outside the banks but will also remain convenient for the beneficiaries as they no more have to visit the banks and stand in queues for hours. He said that the beneficiaries from far villages were also facing difficulties in reaching banks due to non-availability of public transport.
