The teachers engaged in the higher education are perhaps the sole professional fraternity, who plunges into their profession without undergoing any formal or informal training of any kind, thereby making them vulnerable to all types of inadvertent lapses/errors during their professional careers, said Prof. Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Vice-Chancellor of the University. If the budding bureaucrats, army personnel, high ranking police & other civilian officials etc are provided a compulsory formal training before joining the office, why to leave out the teaching fraternity? This question was raised by Prof. Sandhu in his inaugural address at inauguration of the Two Day Workshop on Higher Education & Academic Administrators at the UGC-HRDC of the University. More than twenty five HODs, Directors, Dean Faculties of the University & its Regional Campuses are participating in the Workshop.In addition to discharging their prime responsibility of excellent teaching & carrying out the authentic research in their respective academic disciplines, the prevailing work culture necessitates that they keep themselves periodically updated with the various rules & regulations governing their professional & academic career.
Taking into consideration this reality, it has been mandated by the MHRD that the newly recruited faculty of today undergo, what are known as “Induction Training Programmes”. These programmes of one month duration were envisaged to acquaint them with the issues, challenges being faced by the education, in addition to impart them a brief insight into the various civil, academic, administrative rules & regulations. Ruing the fact that the teachers generally are not familiar with the multiplicity of apex academic bodies, funding agencies in the country, which, he said, hampers the academic & professional growth not only of the teachers, but also of the institutions, where they are employed. The teachers of today also have to assume the responsibility of the academic administrators sooner or later, which, necessitates that they are well-versed in the administrative rules & regulations, governing educational institutes.Prof. Renu Bhardwaj, Director IQAC & the Coordinator shed light on the significance of such workshop for the academic administrators, particularly in the light of the impending new education policy. The academic administrators need to keep themselves abreast with the issues confronting the higher education in the country, she stressed. Prof. Adarsh Pal Vig, Director UGC-HRDC apprised the audience with activities of the center. Earlier Prof. J. S. Sandhu was accorded a formal welcome by Prof. Adarsh Pal Vig, Prof. Hardeep Singh, Dean Students' Welfare, Prof Renu Bhardwaj and Dr. Mohan Kumar.
