Prevention of Illicit Poppy, Cannabis Cultivation: DLC meet in Anantnag

Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Khalid Jahangir convened a meeting of District Level Committee for Prevention of Illicit Poppy and Cannabis cultivation, here today at DC Office Anantnag.ADDC, ADC, SDMs of Kokernag, Dooru, Bijbehara, Excise & Taxation Officer, Range Anantnag, CAO, CHO, DSWO, Dy. SP, CID Anantnag and Tehsildar Pahalgam among others attended the meeting.The meeting sought suggestion from the concerned officers besides discussing strategies to be adopted for the eradication of Cannabis and Poppy cultivation in the district.The Deputy Commissioner stressed for coordinated and holistic approach by all the concerned departments and enforcement agencies for permanent eradication of drug menace from the district to save the future generation. He asked for involvement of Media, NGOs, religious organisations, Panchayats and educational institutions for creating mass awareness regarding the drug menace.The DC directed the concerned SDMs and other concerned to start a drive against the cultivation of Poppy and Cannabis cultivation in the the district.He directed the concerned Tehsildars to inform the Patwaries to warn the poppy cultivators of their areas that entries will be made in their Jamabandis for the said cultivation if they continue cultivating the crop.

He also asked for mapping and identification of areas where cultivation of Poppy & Cannabis is done and provide the details to the DC in a week’s time so that action plan is framed for persuading such cultivators for alternate crops.The DC asked the concerned to prepare the DPR for High Density Plantation as alternate crop on 200 Kanals of land in village Tulkhan, as a pilot project, being presently used for poppy cultivation, besides the poppy cultivators of four more villages of Tehsil Bijbehara and village Lidru of Tehsil Pahalgam will also be encouraged for alternate crop cultivation like High Density Plantation & Flower cultivation.The DC asked DSWO Anantnag to identify the landless widows, youth and others working as labourers in poppy fields in the identified villages and provide them Vocational Training and Skill Development Training as an alternative to the menace of poppy cultivation.
