MC Kharar becomes first council converting biodegradable waste into organic compost and earning income: Deputy Commissioner

Municipal Council Kharar became first council in the state to convert biodegradable waste into organic compost through state-of-the-art machine and paving way to generate income for the municipality. Now, organic compost prepared by MC Kharar is ready to make your garden and plants lush green. It was disclosed by Deputy Commissioner Mr. Girish Dayalan.He said that MC Kharar has launched a pilot project to manage Solid Waste Management on a decentralized manner. Under this initiative, MC Kharar has established a waste management processing Plant at Civil Hospital Road Kharar, where biodegradable waste is being converted into organic compost. Since its launch from November 11, MC has produced almost one ton organic compost, which can generate income for the municipality by selling to nurseries, household gardens and bulk purchasers.Deputy Commissioner said that by complying with NGT orders and Government directions and Solid Waste management Rules 2016, six more such small scale plants on decentralized manner will be established within the city to eliminate the dumping and making city bin free. 

He informed that total 7 waste management plants would start working in the month of January next year.Divulging other details, MC Executive Officer Mr. Kulbir Singh Brar mentioned that Senior IAS officer of Local Government, hundreds of visitors, various organizations and other departments have visited and inspected the plant. He said that all the dignitaries have been apprised in detail about making organic compost without any foul smell by using combination of mechanical system and adopting best management practices. He apprised that machine can process three quintal waste daily, which generates 2 quintal organic compost.He said that only solution to manage municipal solid waste and make the Kharar city clean and green is by establishing more such small scale decentralized mechanical systems with greater awareness among residents and their positive support. He appealed that anyone interested in using organic compost for their gardens etc can grab the compost bags from MC Kharar’s Compost Shed located opposite MC Park on Civil Hospital Road, Kharar.
