GPO comes alive with long queues of people; We are witnessing huge rush of people, says SP post offices

At a time when most of the courier services across Kashmir are defunct since August 5, the General Post Office (GPO) at Lal Chowk, Srinagar has come alive with people thronging the place for speed post and other means of communication available there.According to wire service—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), hundreds of people reach GPO Srinagar and stand in queues to ensure their speed posts are sent to their dear ones out of Jammu and Kashmir. At present GPO is the only place where people can get their speed posts sent. “I reached GPO Srinagar at 10 am and had to be in queue to send my speed post,” said Junaid Ahmed. “My cousin stays in Delhi and I had to send important documents to him. Since internet is not working and courier services are shut across Kashmir since August 5, GPO is the only choice.”Another local, Ghulam Qadir Lone, said that he had to get details of medicines, he had ordered and wanted to send bills to the company and other important documents on priority basis. “GPO is the only choice as we have no other option,” he said. At GPO long queues were seen outside the main entry gate also.According to a senior employee at a courier service—Trackon, their services have been shut since August 5 due to non-availability of internet. “We are solely depending on internet connectivity which is not available,” said the Trackon employee. Another courier service employee said that they have huge load of pending couriers that couldn’t be delivered due to ban on pre-paid phones.Talking to KNO, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices B L Pandita said that GPO is witnessing huge rush of people of late. “This is the only place where people can send speed post. We have ordered other post offices to ensure facility is available but due to some technical issues they couldn’t give the facility. We are at it,” he said. (KNO)
