To prevent ground water and holy Bein from contamination Sultanpur Lodhi, the department of water supply and sanitation has taken a unique initiative by carrying the septage and sullage of all 4000 toilets unites to the sewerage treatment plants (STPs) of Makhu and Zira Tehsil.Divulging the details, superintending engineer ER. KK Saini said that a robust water management plan was chalked out by the department in the wake of mega celebrations to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It was the need of the hour to go eco-friendly to protect our natural recourses as Sri Gur Nanak Dev ji had laid emphasis over environment protection, said ER. Saini.To cater the sea of devotees the department has set up 4000 toilet units across the holy city. Around 2.5 MLD septage and sullage is being produced everyday at these toilet unites, which needed a safe handling, adding he said that all the toilet unites have been equipped with metal and pvc containers to hold the waste.As many as 66 GPS enabled vehicles have been assigned to collect the waste from these toilets units which is being taken to the Sewerage treatment plants (STPs) of Makhu and Zira tehsil, said the Superintending Engineer. He said that the movement of these vehicles is being monitored by the central control room and all the septage and sullage is being dumped at the STPs to ensure the scientific disposal of sewerage waste.ER. Saini said that the step resulted in zero ground discharge, which eventually prevented the contamination of Holy Bein. He said that 33 additional vehicles have been kept on standby mode to ensure speedy transportation and disposal of waste. Meanwhile another STP at Tashpur Village has been kept on standby mode to tackle any kind of trouble at other STPs adding ER. Sainni said that the mammoth exercise was undertaken because of Sewerage treatment plant of Sultanpur Lodhi was operating at its full capacity. MLA Sultanpur Lodhi Mr. Navtej Singh Cheema, while lauding the efforts of the department of water supply and sanitation, said that the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh was committed to preserve the sanctity and heritage of this holy city where Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji had spent more than 14 years of his life. He said that move is aimed at keeping the Holy Bein pollution free from Sewerage waste. He said that around 500 employees of the department have been deployed in the city to ensure cleanliness during gale events being taken place here.
