To encourage the farmers for adopting paddy straw management, the Deputy Commissioner Mr Varinder Kumar Sharma on Friday flagged off six ultra-modern vans of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare department to disseminate information in the villages about the ill effects of the paddy straw burning.Flagging off the vans from the office of the department, the Deputy Commissioner said that it was need of the hour to make the farmers aware of the hazardous effects of the paddy straw burning, which was posing a danger to human health and environment. He said that these ultra-modern vans equipped with audio-video aides would be instrumental in awakening the farmers about the need for paddy straw management.Mr Sharma said that farm residue could play an important role in enhancing the fertility of the soil.The Deputy Commissioner said that besides the audio-visual means vans would also disseminate information to the farmers through the pamphlets and posters for making them aware of the pollution caused by paddy burning beside the ways and means of managing the paddy straw effectively. He said that the shunning the stubble burning, will be a real tribute to 550th Parkash Purab of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji who was an ardent nature lover and gave the message of 'Pawan Guru Pani Pita Mata Dharat Mahatt' to the people so we must secure the environment besides ensuring ecological balance by planting trees.The Deputy Commissioner also reiterated that instead of burning the paddy straw the farmers must use farm implements to efficaciously tackle the menace of paddy straw burning in the district thereby making the district pollution-free. Mr Sharma said that the Punjab government led by the Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh was providing huge subsidies to the farmers for purchasing the ultra-modern equipment that could be useful in effective paddy straw management.Mr Sharma said that due to the burning of paddy straw several major nutrients and other micronutrients of soil were destroyed whereas the soil health improves drastically if the residue of straw was mixed in the soil.On the occasion, Chief Agriculture Officer Dr Nazar Singh and Agriculture officer, Dr Naresh Gulati and others were also present.
