New Avenues in science

Students seek careers in science for different reasons. Some have very specific goals such as curing diseases, countering pollution, developing a space vehicle, designing roads, bridges, skyscrapers, or they imagine building companies that capitalise on new engineering and scientific capabilities. Others make the choice because they are curious about the natural world. You will find that many are motivated by the excitement and beauty of the intellectual world and hope to formulate theories that will lead to new ways of thinking about the world. Still others think about educating people about science through schools and colleges, through the media; they want to provide counsel or shape public or make Policies on issues of direct relevance to science or engineering.

The contributions of scientists already extend beyond research and development and throughout the realms of teaching, business, industry and government. People with bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in science and engineering are forming companies, managing businesses, practising law formulating policy, consulting and running for political office. They had common interests that transcend the differences among individuals, corporate endeavours or nations. They are forming global committees on issues of direct relevance to science and engineering. Still others think about educating people about science or through the media; they want to provide counsel or shape public to new ways of thinking about the world. Now if you are contemplating  a career in science or engineering, what you want to know is how to begin your planning most effectively. First, you must assess how well your own skills and personality match the career you imagine. Not all science-oriented students are alike, any more than all artists or bankers are alike. The path to a scientific career is demanding mentally, physically and emotionally. Not everyone has the perseverance to complete years of concentrated study. But for those with sufficient interest and determination, the experience of doing scientific or technical work is supremely exhilarating. Whether you are bright enough to become a scientist can never be specifically measured because no kind of intelligence applies across all the many fields of science. But trust in your deeper feelings. If  your interest in science is real, you probably want to understand, use and explore them on a deeper level and that would have been fetching you good grades through school and junior college/Intermediate level.

The Future of Science

CAREERS IN MODERN SCIENCE

Biotechnology is the industrial use of living organisms to manufacture food, drugs or other products. It happens to be the fastest growing applied science of our times. Very rapidly it is becoming the cornerstone of industrial development. Career in Biotechnology involves the use of plant and animal cells and microbes in the manufacture of goods useful to mankind. But mainly, the biotechnology boom is due to genetic engineering, in which simple life forms are created to make entirely new products. Latest addition to the science has been the development of genetic engineering. In Genetic Engineering the principles of Biotechnology are used to modify the genome of microorganisms which are then used to produce insulin and other medically beneficial drugs.

Applications

Some of the spectacular applications are in medicine, where antibodies can be made to diagnose and treat diseases, human insulin made widely available, and new vaccines found to ward off hitherto intractable infections, where it may soon be possible even to compensate for defective human genes. Biotechnology has an enormous range of other applications too:

In the food industry from inducing cattle to grow faster.

In the production of new enzymes for making cheeses

In eradicating crop diseases

In the making of biorfortified food items which have higher national values.

It can provide abundant energy from renewable resources such as alcohol for motor fuel.

Plastic, paints, and artificial fibres can be made by using enzymes instead of chemical processes

Anyone who wants to know how science is changing our world will need to know about the dramatic progress of biotechnology. The food processing industry has been able to touch greater heights due to Biotechnology. Biotech can greatly improve the nutritional value of even existing foods.
