All J&K Senior Citizens Welfare Council (SCWC) in collaboration with University of Jammu today celebrated ‘World Elders’ Day’ here at Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium Jammu University. Advisor Farooq Ahmed Khan was the chief guest and Vice Chancellor  Jammu University, Manoj K Dhar was the guest of honour. In his address, the Advisor said that the government is committed to create facilities and extend benefits to senior citizens under the relevant rules.“Every effort is being made to ensure welfare of the seniors and the process to frame rules and laws is on in this regard” the Advisor said.Farooq Khan said that every individual has a right to live a dignified life and with the focused schemes by the government for senior citizens a positive change will be visible in the society. He said that the Social Welfare Department has formulated many welfare schemes which would greatly assist and improve the life of seniors in the state. Appreciating the works done by the Council, Advisor said that today’s celebration saw an amalgamation of the rural and urban culture with the popular and regional music coming together on the same platform. These events are essential for the mental and emotional well being of senior citizens, he added.VC Jammu University, in his address, appreciated the students for celebrating this day and also advised them to draw inspirations from their elders which will facilitate them to face the emerging challenges.Speaking on the occasion, Director General Social Welfare Department, Rehana Batool highlighted the achievements and various schemes of the Department for the welfare of the senior citizens.Earlier, President SCWC, Nirmala Chattoo listed various works undertaken by the Council and highlighted various issues of the seniors. Among others present were the members of SCWC, social workers and organizations, a large number of senior citizens, students and staff of Jammu University and various colleges.
