Gurpreet Singh gets good profit from fish cum pig farming

Training and subsidy by fisheries department proves boon

The subsidiary occupation of fish farming and piggery has proven a boon for progressive farmers of Hasanpur village of Dhuri tehsil in Sangrur district. Gurpreet Singh is earning good profit by adopting fishery and piggery.Narrating his success story, Gurpreet Singh said that he has 4 acres land. To get good profit, he decided to adopt a subsidiary occupation. In 2014, he took training   from 'Innovative Pig Breeding Centre' Nabha and started pig farming. In 2015, he contacted the fisheries department, Sangrur and official provided five day training on fish farming, during which he came to know, how he can use the pig excreta as a feed for fish and can reduce the cost of fisheries. He started the fish farming after digging a pond in 3 acres land under the supervision of district fisheries department. He stocked the fingerlings of six types of fish (Rohu, Katla, Murakh, Grass Carp, Common Carp, Silver Carp) approved by the fisheries department and started using pig excreta as a feed for fish and reduced the input cost of fish farming.Gurpreet Singh said that he has annual income of Rs. 7.5 to 8 lakhs from 3 acres fish pond. Talking about pigs, he said there are 12 female and 2 male pigs of the 'Large White Yorkshire' type and has about 100 baby pigs in his farm. He has annual income of Rs 7 to 8 lakh from piggery.Assistant Director Fisheries, Sangrur Mr. Charanjit Singh and Chief Executive Officer, Fish Farmers Development Agency, Sangrur, Mr. Rakesh Kumar said that the department provides all kinds of technical information to Gurpreet Singh. During the year 2016, Rs 1.80 lakh subsidy for digging a pond and Rs. 0.46 lakh feed subsidy provided to farmer. In addition to this, subsidy of Rs 23,000 has been provided for the installation of four paddle wheel aerators for fish growth.

Deputy Commissioner Sangrur Mr. Ghanshyam Thori said that farmer Gurpreet Singh is a source of inspiration for many others. Punjab government is providing huge subsidy to promote the subsidiary occupations, so farmers should avail the maximum benefit of subsidy being provided under various schemes, Mr. Thori added.
