A. Venu Prasad, Principal Secretary Local Government Department today called upon the citizen of the state to launch crusade for curbing Single Use Plastic form  Punjab. He also made passionate appeal to the public to work towards earning the status of ‘Plastic Free Punjab’ which would be a befitting tribute to Guru Nanak Dev ji  on his 550th Parkash Purb being celebrated this year. He was delivering keynote address after inaugurating the State Level Workshop for Urban Local Bodies on  Swachh Survekshan-2020 on the issue of curbing single use plastic.Disclosing this official spokesperson of the Local Bodies Department said that the workshop was  jointly conducted by Ministry of Housing & Urban  Affairs and PMIDC conducted at Chandigarh.  He said that about 400 participants  from 167 UlBs including   Commissioners of Municipal Corporations/Mayors , Deputy Directors Local Government Department, Executive officers of Municipal Council's/Nagar  Panchayats/Presidents , Sanitary Inspectors , Community Facilitators, staff of PMIDC participated in the workshop. Administrative Secretaries / representatives of 10  departments also participated in the workshop.Mr. Ajoy Sharma Secretary Department of Local Government cum CEO PMIDC presented an overview of State of Punjab  on SBMU and explained the activities to be undertaken during "Swachhta Hi Sewa" Campaign and collection and safe disposal of plastic waste. He also underlined the  role of various department in Swachhta Hi Sewa Campaign.Mr. V.K Jindal Joint Secretary MoHUA while delivering his address underlined the need for source  segregation and processing of 100% wet waste, citizen participation in Waste Management, integration of rag pickers into formal waste Management systems, proper  management of sewers, popularisation of alternatives to single use plastic like cloth bags , jute bags, steel utensils etc.The spokesperson said that the National Project  Management Team of MoHUA explained the Toolkit  of Swachh Survekshan -2020 last leg of which will commence from 04th January, 2020. He said that the Workshop  will go a long way in propelling the success in mobilizing communities in Swachhta Hi Sewa Campaign and curbing Single Use Plastic in the state.
