DC Directs Officials To Make Poshan Abhiyan A Mass Movement To Combat Anemia And Malnutrition

Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma on Sunday directed the officials to make 'Poshan Abhiyan', a mass movement to eliminate anemia and malnutrition from the society besides ensuring good health of pregnant women, lactating mothers and the children.Presiding over a meeting to inaugurating massive whole month activities on Poshan Abhiyan, Mr Varinder Kumar Sharma said that anemia is a major health problem in the country and time has come to eliminate it completely.The deputy commissioner said that Poshan Abhiyan is one of a revolutionary program to improve the nutritional indicators of women and children and motivated the officials to leave no stone unturned to make the district anemia and malnutrition free. He said that there is need for having proper coordination between Women and Child Development Department, Health and Family Welfare Department, Rural Development Department, Panchayati Raj institutions, Water Supply and Sanitation Department, Food Supply Department and Education Departments and these departments have to play a proactive role by preparing a joint strategy to curb the menace. He said that in this month, the administration will organize daily activities including Prabhat Pheri, Panchayat meetings, Poshan Mela, recipe competition on Poshtik Aahar, health and nutrition camp, cycle rally on hygiene, school-based activities, meetings of self help groups and farmers clubs, talk camps on anemia, Poshan Walk on wash, Poshan Par Charcha, Defeat Diarrhoea campaign and home visits by ASHA, Anganwari workers ANMs. The deputy commissioner added that all pregnant women and lactating mothers would be sensitized for having the intake of a nutritious diet. Besides, they would be educated about the importance of breastfeeding within an hour of childbirth. The Deputy Commissioner directed the health department to ensure the regular supply of the iron, folic acid tablets, Albendazole in the government schools and anganwari centres.  He also said that people will also be educated about maintaining cleanliness and changes in their eating habits, activities to be carried out in Anganwari Centres and others etc.Mr Singh said that Poshan Abhiyan is aimed at achieving improvement in the nutritional status of children from 0-6 years, adolescent girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers.He said that in this drive, the special emphasis is being laid on the children, pregnant women, lactating mothers.On the occasion, SDMs Mr Amit Kumar, Mr Rajesh Kumar, Mr Sanjiv Kumar Sharma, District Program Officer Mr Amarjeet Singh Bhullar, DEO Secondary Harinder Pal Singh, and others were present.
