PPCB inks MoU with IIT, Delhi for Source Apportionment Study

Today on the occasion of celebration of World Environement Day with theme as “Beat Air Pollution”, a State Level function was organised in the premises of IIT, Ropar. The program was graced by the Capt. Amrinder Singh, CM, Punjab along with his Cabinet Colleagues and Sh. Rana KP Singh, Speaker Vidhan Sabha.Nine cities of Punjab namely Amritsar, Jalandhar, Dera Baba Nanak, Ludhiana, Khanna, DeraBassi, MandiGobindgarh, Patiala and NayaNangal have been declared as non-attainment cities for not meeting the national ambient air annual standards fixed for dust particles. There are city specific reasons and sources which are contributing to the air quality of that particular city. To know the reasons and sources of air pollution, a Memorandum of Understanding have been signed in the presence of CM, Punjab between Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi and Punjab Pollution Control Board. The MoU has been signed by Er. Krunesh Garg, Member Secretary, PPCB and Mr. Harsh Kota, Associate Professor IIT, Delhi. Under the MoU, the IIT, Delhi within six months shall complete the Source Apportionment (SA) Study and Emission Inventory (EI) studies to identify the sources of air pollution in seven cities including Jalandhar, Dera Baba Nanak, Khanna, DeraBassi, MandiGobindgarh, Patiala & NayaNangal and suggests the various means to control such emissions contributing to air pollution. Prof. S.S. Marwaha, Chairman, PPCB informed that this scientific study will provide information to take necessary action based on the sources of pollution so as to improve the air quality of these cities which in turn help the state to take out these cities from the list of non-attainment cities. Prof. Marwaha furhter stated that this study will go a long way to mitigate the problem of Air Pollution in urban settlements/ cities.
