Will set up JPC to probe demonetization scam: Manish Tewari

Former union minister and the Congress candidate from Shri Anandpur Sahib Manish Tewari today said that his party’s government at the centre will set up a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to probe the demonetization scam in the country which is running into hundreds and thousands of crores of rupees. “Demonetisation was not only a huge financial scam, it was like brutal murder of the economy and responsibility needs to be fixed for it and those guilty brought to book”, he remarked.In an informal interaction with reporters before embarking on his campaign here today, Tewari said, the demonetization decision, which was arbitrary and dictatorial had hit every section of the society, whether a daily wage earning labourer, a middle class working family or a small or medium entrepreneur, very hard.He said, such a decision, which ran havoc on the economy and destroyed the livelihood of hundreds and thousands of people across the country, needs to be probed and responsibility fixed. “We will ask and probe as what was the need of the demonetization and what were its economic consequences”, he said.Besides, he added, it also needs to be probed as how much new currency was printed after the old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination were withdrawn. He pointed out, currency notes worth about Rs 16 lakh crores were demonetized and there was a need to find out whether same amount of currency was printed or much more than that, as is being reported, and if so where did that money go.Just because an authoritarian regime was in place and nobody dared to ask these questions in the past, the times are changing and these questions must be answered and these will be answered, he said, while asserting, “we will hold to account and answer everyone involved in this scam of humungous proportions”.
