Punjab Rural and Urban Development Minister Tript Bajwa has asserted that the victory of Sunil Jakhar from Gurdaspur could be game changer in state’s political domain in the context of his potential to become chief minister at appropriate time.Addressing series of political conferences, Bajwa maintained a non-Sikh taking over as the chief minister would be the right articulation of Punjab’s composite cultural traditions, the traditions that must be cemented in practice rather than just resorting to sloganeering to exploit the sentiments of the people as done by the Akalis. He said it was for this reason that Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had said that Jakhar’s victory would pave the way for his elevation as the chief minister. He said both the Akali Dal and the BJP were communal outfits going by the claims of their being Sikh and Hindu parties. He maintained Congress was the only secular party that extends equal respect to all religious thoughts. Exploiting religious sentiments of the people has always been the nefarious design of these two parties. He reminded the people that it was the Congress that has facilitated the elevation of Dr Manmohan Singh to the office of the Prime Minister and Dr Abdul Kalam as President. On the other hand, the BJP had squeezed out all other religious identities out of political domain that was un-Indian.Bajwa maintained that the Modi-Akali Dal combine posed biggest threat to Punjab’s composite culture. Punjab has the unique characteristic of being the land of Sikh Gurus, sages, saints and seers who all have reinforced the philosophy of humanism contrary to the hate narrative spread by Modi and his partners. He said it was in this context that victory of Sunil Jakhar would have potential to change political narrative in this border state.
