Former union minister and senior Congress leader, Manish Tewari today batted for special compensatory industrial package for Punjab. He said, Punjab had suffered enough due to the Bharitya Janata Party’s appeasement of hill states of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. “That is why, Punjab needs a compensatory package not only for industry, but also agriculture, as Punjab has fed the nation for all these years and now it is the duty of the nation to pay back as our agriculture and farmers are in distress”, Tewari said, while addressing a series of public meetings in the Mohali area today. He rued the sad state of industry in Punjab which he said was because of the double whammy caused by BJP’s special tax holiday to the neighbouring states and the ten years of hostile Akali-BJP regime in Punjab.“If the neighbouring Baddi and Nalagarh can come up as industrial hubs within no time, there is no reason why Mohali cannot”, he observed, while alleging that both the BJP government at the centre and the Akali-BJP government in Punjab played havoc with the industry in Punjab. The Congress candidate from Sri Anandpur Sahib parliamentary constituency said that thanks to the Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, who during last two years has tried his best to build up the confidence of industry and the investors, the industry has started seeing the revival in the state. He reminded the residents as how it was during Capt Amarinder’s previous regime that Mohali came up as an IT hub at the pattern of Bangalore and Hyderabad. “But unfortunately for Punjab, the ten years of Akali-BJP rule sabotaged and undermined everything as they started asking for shares in every business with the result the industry ran away”, he said.Tewari promised, with a Congress government already in Punjab and a friendly Congress government at the centre, he will ensure that the entire region, spread across from Mohali on one side and Nangal and Banga on other two sides, emerges as an industrial hub. He said, the area had an added advantage as the land prices were relatively lesser here as compared to rest of Punjab. Besides, he added, the area had close proximity to the Mohali International Airport, which will encourage the investors to visit here and explore business opportunities. He said, it was important that there was a Congress led government at the centre to provide uniform and indiscriminate assistance to all the states, unlike Modi led BJP government, who could not look beyond Gujarat and a few Gujarati friends.
