Two militants were killed in a gunfight that raged between militants and Government Forces on Saturday morning. A police official said that on a credible input a cordon and search operation was launched at Gehind area in District Shopian, by Police and Government Forces.During searches, militants fired upon the search party. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter.In the ensuing encounter, 2 militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter.They were identified as Abid Wagay resident of Rawalpora Shopian and Shahjahan Mir resident of Amshepora Shopian.According to the police records, both the killed militants were affiliated with JeM. They were wanted by law for their complicity in a series of militancy related  activities including attack on security establishments.According to the police records, both the killed militants Abid Wagay and Shahjahan Mir were involved in the abduction and subsequent killings of civilians Firdous Ahmad of Batgund and Nissar Ahmad of Kapran and policeman Balwant Singh of Batgund last year in 2018. They were also involved in the killing of lady Khusboo Jan at Viel Shopian earlier this year. Moreover both were also involved in killing of a civilian Tanveer Ahmad of Bemnipora at Kachdoora in Shopian. Both of them were also involved in arson and setting ablaze of Panchayat Ghars at Kanjiullar and Ramnagar.
As per the police records, Shahjahan was also involved in snatching of weapons and killing of four police personnel at Arhama Shopian near petrol pump last year in 2018. He was also involved in attack on Police Station Shopian in which one cop Saqib Mohi-ud-Din was killed and his rifle was snatched. He was involved in the abduction and killing of a young boy Huzaif Ashraf Kuttay resident of Manzgam D.H Pora.Several militancy related cases were registered against both of them for planning and executing militant attacks on security establishments and killing of civilians in the area."Incriminating materials including arms & ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter. All these materials have been taken in the case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other militancy cases," said the police official.Reports said that over two dozen persons were injured in clashes with the government forces near the encounter site.Eye witnesses and reports said that clashes erupted in Shopian town as the news of killing of two militants spread in the area.They said that youth took to streets and pelted the forces with stones to protest the militant killings.The forces, according to witnesses, fired tear gas and pellets to disperse the protesters, resulting into injuries  to at least two dozen persons.A health official of the district confirmed injuries to scores persons. He said some injured were shifted to Srinagar for specialised treatment.(CNS)
