Scores of girl students today met the former Chief Minister and Congress candidate from Amritsar Capt Amarinder Singh and urged him to look into the issue of their safety and security in the city. They told Capt Amarinder that they were feeling very unsafe and insecure in Amritsar particularly after an Assistant Sub Inspector of Police was shot dead by a youth Akali Dal leader as he tried to save the honour of his daughter.During the interaction held in a local hotel, Capt Amarinder asked them what concerned them the most. While the concern for getting the right kind of jobs after their studies was top on their mind, they also voiced their grave concern over their safety and security in the city.

One of the girls, studying journalism, told the Congress leader that after the ASI was shot dead by one Akali goon Ranjit Rana, the parents in Amritsar stopped allowing their daughters move out as nobody was feeling secure.“If a police official, who is otherwise supposed to provide security to others, had to give his life to save the dignity of his daughter what will be the plight of the common people?” she pointed out.Capt Amarinder told the students that he understood and appreciated the safety and security concerns and assured them once he enters the parliament, he will draw the country’s attention towards the prevailing law and order situation in Punjab where our daughters are not feeling safe. The Congress candidate said, all this was happening under the patronage of the local government and the person who killed the ASI was also a close aide of the Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia. He also promised the students that he will explore the avenues whereby they will not have to move out of the city and state for their jobs.
