ELC & Chunav Pathshala to sensitize people

As many as 7681 Electoral  Literacy Clubs (ELC) have been formed in the State to engage the school students through interesting activities and hands-on experience to sensitize them on their electoral rights and familiarize them with the electoral process of registration and voting.This was stated by Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Devesh Kumar here on Tuesday.He said that 1616 ELCs have been set up in the schools, besides 227 in colleges and Universities in the State. He said that Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELC) were playing a pivotal role to educate future voters and first-time voters about voter registration and the electoral process. Schools have been asked to appoint one or two teachers, preferably from the Humanities Department to act as nodal officers and mentors for ELCs.The role of the clubs will also include making students understand the constitutional, legislative and legal provisions, technological innovation, and role of the Election Commission, courts, media and other stakeholders in the poll process.Apart from this, 5818 ‘Chunav Pathshalas’ have been identified at polling station level, where drop out students from schools and others community members viz: teenagers in age group of 14-17 years, voters of 18-19 years of age, young and middle aged women, senior citizens, people with disabilities, children below 14 years, who don’t go to school and people from every community living in the area will be involved and made aware of their right to franchise through classroom based type interesting and thought-provoking activities. Besides this, Rallies, poster making, declamation, wall writing are also a part of their curriculum. 'Chunav Pathshalas' will be coordinated by its convener who will be known as the ‘Matdata Prashikshak’.
