Food Safety teams conducts three thousand inspections in three months

650 cases registered; Penalty worth Rs 65 lakh imposed

The food safety wing of health department kept the guard on against unscrupulous food business operators even after the festival season was over . Under mission tandrust Punjab, the commisionerate  of food and drug administration Punjab conducted 3000 inspections of food items in last three months. The department launched 650 cases in the competent court against those indulging in food adulteration. Few cases where the food items were found to be unsafe were launched in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate. In the months from November to end of January, fine was imposed against 600 odd food business operators amounting to Rs 65 lacs. In the meanwhile, 270 awareness camps were also organised to make the people aware about the issues related to adulteration of food. In addition, 2 food safety vans of the department undertook 2400 samples of food items at the level of consumers. 2700 kgs of milk and milk products, 315 kg of sub-standard fruits were seized. K S Pannu, Commissioner Food and drug administration Punjab and Mission Director, Mission Tandrust Punjab warned of stricter action against those still indulging in selling of sub-standard food items. He said that the raids against unscrupulous food business operators will continue and the department shall request the courts to impose heavy fines against the culprits.
