Five militants killed in Kulgam encounter

Five Hizbul Mujahideen militants have been killed in an encounter between government forces and militants in Kellam area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Sunday.A joint team of army's 9 RR, CRPF and SOG launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in the area upon receiving a specific input about the presence of Militants in the Kellam area.While the forces intensified searches towards suspected house the hiding militants fired upon government forces triggering a gunfight, police official told Valley Media Service.The slain militants identified as Waseem Ahmad Rather son of Bashir Ahmad Rather resident of Ashmuji Kulgam, Aqib Nazir Mir son of Nazir Ahmad resident of Zangulpora Devsar, Parvaiz Ahmad Bhat son of Bashir Ahmad resident of Mukdam Mohalla Qaimoh, Idrees Ahmad Bhat son of Ramzan Bhat resident of Arwani and Zahid Ahmad Parray son of Abdul Hamid resident of Gopalpora D.H Pora, a police spokesman said Valley Media Service in a statement.As per police records, it was a combined group of proscribed terror outfits HM and LeT and their exact affiliations are being ascertained. They were waned by the law for their complicity in a series of militancy activities including attack on security establishments and civilian atrocities.

Militants Waseem, Aqib and Parvaiz were involved in the killings of a civilian Mohd Iqbal Kawaq resident of Kilam and local army personnel Mukhtar Ahmad son of Gh Hassan Malik resident of Shurat, for which cases stand registered in concerned Police Stations.This group of militants was also involved in various grenade attack incidents across Anantnag and Kulgam districts for which cases stand registered in concerned Police Stations.“Five militants were killed in an operation in Kulgam district of Central Kashmir," Srinagar-based defence spokesman, Col Rajesh Kalia told Valley Media Service.He said weapons and other war-like stores were recovered from the operation site. The operation is over, the spokesman further said.Meanwhile, Clashes broke out between the protesters and the government forces near the site of a gunfight.Witnesses said that the youth took to streets and hurled stones and snowballs at the forces to disrupt the operation in Kellam area of the district.They said that the forces fired tear gas and pellets to disperse the protesters, dozens protesters including CRPF men also injured.Authorities have suspended mobile Internet services in the area as a precautionary measure.(VMS)
