For conserving the district's biodiversity and observing wildlife week  one day awareness and capacity building workshop was held at zila Parishad Bathinda that the chairperson of district biodiversity board - cum-additiobal Deputy Commissioner (development) Sakshi Sawhney presided over.Speaking at the event she said that Punjab government was making many efforts to conserve the rich biodiversity of state. As a part of these efforts, the ages old tress at historical village of Lakhi Jungle have been covered as a park commemorating the 550th birthday of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Besides this trivani plants (neem, peepal and bohar) have been planted in this village. Besides this, during the year long celebrations of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji's birth celebrations, 550 saplings will be planted in every village.The member secretary of biodiversity board Mr Kuldeep Gandhi welcomed the gathering and moderated the discussions.Speaking further Mrs Sakshi Sawhney added that Punjab government was already running many projects in Bathinda regarding biodiversity which included the mini zoo-cum-deer park at Bir Talab, biodiversity parks at village Dyalpura Bhaika and Rampura. These spots are also being developed as tourism destinations.

During the program the old water body of village Gobindpura was also discussed which is rich in flora and fauna. Besides this the gathering discussed rich biodiversity at Dera Biana near village Bibiwala.Dr Gurjit Kaur, professor Government Rajindra College, who is also member of board, told that the college has developed botanical garden which is home to many medicinal plants. The college has also experimented by planting a sapling of chocolate tree. Board member Dr. Jatinder Sehgal gave information about he butterfly park that has come up in Joggers Park. Member Mr Sanjeev Nagpal spoke on genetic engineering and its future. Member Mr Narinder Bassi said that the district administration and municipal corporation Bathinda have been instrumental in raising the butterfly park. He added that more and more people should be told about biodiversity of the district and school children should be taken to trips of these places.Assistant director Krishi Vigyan Kendra Dr Jatinder Brar gave details about the activities of kendra. Besides this officers and employees of Nehru Yuva Kendra, agriculture department, youth services etc and science teachers of various govt schools participated and shared their experiences.
