First Government College Comes Up In City After 1943 : Mla Sanjay Talwar

The construction of new building of Government College East started today, and the construction work was inaugurated by MP Ravneet Singh Bittu in the presence of Ludhiana East MLA Sanjay Talwar, besides several others.This new government college had started classes for the students of first batch on a temporary basis from the Community Centre of Sector 39 on Chandigarh Road, here.The college would operate from this building till the time the college building is constructed.While addressing the gathering MP Mr Ravneet Singh Bittu congratulated the area residents as well as MLA Ludhiana East Mr Sanjay Talwar for this ambitious project, that would benefit thousands of people residing in and around this area.The building for this college would be constructed on five acres of prime land located opposite Vardhman Mill on Chandigarh Road and funds amounting to Rs 12.5 crore would be spent.Bittu stated that the SCD Government College came into being in the year 1920, while the Government College for Girls was started in 1943. He said that it is after a gap of 75 years that a new government college has been started in the city.MLA Sanjay Talwar inferred that the first batch comprises of 80 students of BA first year and from next session, this number would go up and new courses such as BCom, BBA and others would also be started here. 

He thanked Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and Member of Parliament Mr Ravneet Singh Bittu for supporting him in this noble cause. He said that Ludhiana East constituency did not have a college and that is why, it was a long pending demand of the area residents. He said that ever since he became an MLA, opening of a government college was his main agenda.He further informed that development projects worth several hundred crores for Ludhiana East constituency have been in the pipeline. He informed that these projects include an Exhibition Centre for Industry on 8 acre land with cost of Rs 125 crore, roads along the Budha Nullah with a cost of around Rs 50 crore, Eastend Club on 4 acre land with cost of Rs 100 crore, besides several others. Prominent among those present on the occasion included Deputy Commissioner Mr Pardeep Kumar Agrawal, Commissioner of Police Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill, Mr Sanjay Talwar’s father Mr Harbans Lal Talwar, mother Mrs Krishna Talwar, Senior Deputy Mayor Mr Sham Sunder Malhotra, Deputy Mayor Sarabjit Kaur, SCD Government College Principal Mr Dharam Singh Sandhu, besides a large number of area councillors.
