‘Party leaders, activists continuing election boycott campaign’

Police on Friday morning arrested the chairman of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Muhammad Yasin Malik, a party spokesperson said.In a statement issued to GNS, the spokesperson said a large police contingent cordoned Malik’s residence in the wee hours of morning and took him in custody. He was immediately shifted to Kothi Bagh Police Station, he added.Meanwhile, the spokesperson said that JKLF leaders and activists on Friday visited many areas, addressed various gatherings and urged people to boycott the upcoming Municipal and Panchayat elections.Various JKLF leaders and activists also staged a peaceful protest against civilian killings, unrelenting CASO in south, north and central Kashmir, spree of arrests and slapping of PSA on political activists and other “gross human rights violations”.Meanwhile, JKLF chief Malik in a statement condemned the “unrelenting oppression” in Kashmir saying, “On one hand, there are talks of so-called democracy, empowerment of masses in the name of Panchayat and Municipal elections and on the other hand, brutal killings of Kashmiris, CASO and crackdowns, spree of arrests, slapping PSA on political activists and shifting them to jails outside Kashmir and choking every peaceful dissent by military and police might has been enhanced by present ruling regime in Jammu Kashmir.”“How can India and its local abettors claim democracy and non-violence when they have let loose a reign of terror against political dissent and peaceful resistance,” he said.
