CS Talwar, Secretary cum Chief Executive of the Indian Red Cross Society, Punjab Red Cross branch, here today called upon students to come forward in a big way to donate blood and popularize blood donation among different sections of the society. He was speaking at a blood donation camp organised by the Rayat Bahra University School of Medical and Allied Sciences, where a total of 108 volunteers donated blood.Talwar said that every year our country needed five crore units of blood whereas the availability was only 2.5 crore units. So there was an urgent need to popularize blood donation to cover the gap between availability and demand.Dr Daljit Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the Rayat Bahra University, on this occasion said that there were nearly eight main blood types. This indicated that the right type of blood must be available at the right time. So to save a life of people, there had to be a public awareness about how important it was to donate blood to save human lives.Dr Neena Mehta, Dean of the University School of Medical and Allied Sciences, speaking on the occasion said that a volunteer has to be made aware that there should be an interval of 180 days between one donation and another.Gurvinder Singh Bahra, Chairman of the Rayat Bahra Group of Institutions (RBGI), said that blood donation was a noble gesture. It gave a sense of pride to the donor and it also developed an altruistic attitude among blood donors.
