Eleven family members of policemen kidnapped in South Kashmir

Eleven family members of six policemen have been kidnapped by militants, who raided the homes of several police officers across four districts in south Kashmir on Thursday evening, police said.The kidnappings, which police sources say is a pressure tactic by the militants, come after security forces conducted multiple raids and arrested equal number of relatives of some militants in the area in last two days.On Thursday, a policeman was kidnapped from his home in Pulwama district and released after he was questioned and thrashed.Militants barged into the homes of the policemen in Pulwama, Anantnag and Kulgam districts and kidnapped the family members. Among the kidnapped are the brother of a policeman posted in Srinagar and the son of another policeman who works as a cook at police training centre.On Wednesday, the son of a policeman was also kidnapped from Tral. A distraught family has appealed to the kidnappers to release their son. In her appeal, the mother has requested the militant groups to show mercy. A video that has surfaced on social media shows the family and relative pleadings for the child's release. Meanwhile Police official told Press Trust of Kashmir that “no incident of abduction took place in Ganderbal, on the reports on the kidnappings of relatives of policemen in south Kashmir. “No such incident has taken place in Ganderbal” Police said.Earlier in the day, it was reported that the militants had on Thursday kidnapped nine persons connected directly or indirectly with the local police force after raiding their homes in Shopian, Kulgam, Anantnag and other areas of south Kashmir. Militants abducted two more relatives of Jammu and Kashmir policemen on Friday taking the number to 11 within the last three days, an official said. (PTK)
