Gurbachan Singh of village Jafarwala in district Moga is an epitome of small farmer turning into a progressive farmer and a successful fish cultivator. He owns 4 acres of land. After having practiced farming over a couple of years, he realised that the inputs in agriculture have crossed the output. After getting information from the agriculture dept and listening to experts on a radio program, he came across the information that if 2.5 acres of land was converted into fish farming pond, one can earn up to Rs 4 lacs from it.  He contacted the district fishery department Moga wherein he was given information and training regarding fish farming during five days training camp held every month. He got trained from the fishery department Moga in 2007-08 and converted 2 acres of his land into fish cultivation farm. After an year he sold fish worth Rs 1.75 lacs from the 2 acres of land whereas he had spent only Rs 25,000 as input cost. His income was Rs 1.50 lacs which is double the amount earned from selling of crop. Encouraged by this, he took 2.5 acres of land on lease in village Kot Sadar Khan, cultivated fish and earned handsome profit. He also took up piggery and dairy farming wherein he started using dung of pigs and cattle as feed for the fish thereby lowering his input cost on the fish farm. He bought combine harvesters and fodder machines. He is proving to be a source of inspiration for the other fish farmers. Due to his growing clout, he was elected as sarpanch of the village.
