The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) flung in action under the Mission Tandarust Punjab to control the problem flies and foul smell erupting in the vicinity of poultry and broiler farms which have cropped up due to rapid industrialization and civilization during the last two decades. In early 80’s deep litter technology based poultry farms set up in Punjab. In this technology 2-3” thick layer of rice husk was laid down in each shed to collect the litter/ droppings of the birds and this entire material was removed after a period of 3-4 months. However, with advancement in the technology, the cage system came in existence and the poultry farm based on cage system, known as layered poultry farms, came to be practiced in most of the poultry farms in the State of Punjab and the adjoining States. These poultry farms are commonly based on open house system, which means that the atmosphere inside the poultry farm sheds depends upon its surrounding atmosphere and the atmosphere within the shed is not controlled manually. These poultry farms are of framed structure where there is an open space of 4-6’ above the ground level and thereafter a slab is laid down on a framed structure having about 4-5’ wide opening along its throughout length on which the cages of 2-3 tiers are placed. The main function of this opening is to allow to collect bird droppings at the ground level on a kutcha/pucca surface. Further, there is a roof at about 10’ above the said slab. Thereafter, after a gap of 5-6’, a similar slab has been constructed as at 4-6 feet for placing of the cages. Thus, the litter/ droppings of the birds from the second stage are collected on the roof of first stage.Mr. S.S. Mathru, Environment Engineer, Regional Office, Patiala said that now onwards birds droppings has been cleared on regular basis. Mostly poultry farms adopted this technique and as a result surroundings in their vicinity remain a lot tidier with this technique.
