Prime Minister Narendra Modi Attributes Success of Swachh Bharat Mission to the Enthusiastic Participation of People Across the Country

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that the success and milestones achieved by the Swachh Bharat Mission has been possible due to the efforts and participation by the citizens across the country. He said that there is now a perceptible positive change in the mindset of the people towards Swachhata.He emphasized on the efforts of cities of Madhya Pradesh especially Indore and Bhopal which have consistently performed exceedingly well in Swachhata rankings year after year and are setting good examples for the other towns and cities of the country. He said that the country is now closer to realize the dream of Clean India by 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in 2019.Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented awards to the top states, cities and Organizations of the Swachh Survekshan 2018 in Indore today. Lok Sabha Speaker Smt Sumitra Mahajan, Sh. ShivrajSingh Chouhan, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and Sh. Hardeep S Puri, MoS (I/C), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and were present on the occasion among other dignitaries.Jharkhand was awarded as the best performing state while Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh bagged 2nd and 3rd position. Indore, Bhopal and Chandigarh emerged as the top 3 cleanest cities of the country while Greater Mumbai was awarded the cleanest capital city in the country. Vijayawada, Mysuru and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) were awarded as cleanest cities in population categories of greater than 10 lakh, 3-10 lakh and 1-3 lakh, respectively while Delhi Cantt was awarded as the cleanest Cantonment Board in the country.In the organizations category, Bakeys Foods Private Limited, Hyderabad was awarded for ‘Swachh Innovation’, Bengaluru based Saahas Waste Management Private Limited was awarded under Swachh Best Practice category and the Swachh Entrepreneur award was given to Daily Dump , Bengaluru.   

The prime minister also released the Swachh Survekshan 2018 Report and launched the Swachh Survekshan – 2018 Results Dash Board. The Swachh Survekshan 2018 Dashboard may be accessed from www.swachhsurvekshan2018.org and it mainly comprises five sections, National Ranking (Cities with population greater than 1 Lakh), Zonal Ranking (Cities with population less than 1 Lakh and ranked zone wise as North, East, South, West and North East), Cantonment Board Ranking (61 Cantt Boards), States Ranking (ranking based on their respective cities performance in SS2018), SS2018 Awards (All Award Categories listing). The dashboard features geotagging of all 4203 Cities including 61 Cantonment Boards that have participated in SS2018. One distinct highlight of this dashboard is the Individual City Ranking and Performance page which may be opened by clicking on the maplink and can also be downloaded a QR coded PDF version of city page.The Swachh Survekshan 2018 report provides details regarding the activities and processes, the products (customized applications) and services deployed during this massive exercise which spanned over 66 days (Jan.4 to Mar.10). The report has the list of all the awardees at the National Level under various population categories i.e. above 10 lakhs, between 3 to 10 lakh, and 1 to 3 lakh population ULBs and the Zonal level awards. In addition to this, the report contains brief write-ups for every awardee with details. It also has a separate section for the Cantonment Boards with a list of the awardees and the National Level Top 20 Cantonment Board Ranking.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Modi also released two booklets titled ‘Advisory on Decentralized Processing of Organic Waste ‘ & ‘ Transforming Urban Landscape of India: A Book of Case Studies’. Advisory on Decentralized Processing of Organic Waste puts together several citizen and institutional initiatives in decentralised composting, varying from individual households to Resident Welfare Associations and Institutions. This Advisory will be a model for citizens and institutions to adopt such practices at their own premises and become effective partners in achieving the objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) and reduce the sanitation burden on the City governments to a large extent. Transforming Urban Landscape of India: A Book of Case Studies focusses on best practices followed by cities in the area of Solid waste management and endeavours to bring inspiring stories to people. Transforming urban landscapes of India will be a continuous series from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The series in its next edition will cover more cities to enable emulation of these good practices all over the country.Presenting awards to the other winners in various categories of Swachh Survekshan 2018 at a separate event earlier in the day, Sh. Hardeep Puri said that the Swachh Bharat Mission has indeed become a jan andolan which is now evident in the enthusiasm shown by the people as well as commitment shown by the city administration in keeping the cities clean. 

Sh.  Puri said that Swachh Survekshan 2018 has seen a massive increase in both the scale and intensity of participation, with 4203 cities covered in this year’s survey, the spirit of competition witnessed across all ULBs is indicative of the cities’ positive intent to provide their citizens the best of service delivery. He further said that the Swachh Bharat Mission has now become an anchor for other developmental initiatives of the government.Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs Minister of UP, Shri Suresh Kumar Khanna, Urban Development and Housing Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Smt.Maya Singh, Urban Development and Housing Minister of Jharkhand Shri Chandreshwar Prasad Singh and D.S Mishra , Secretary , Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs , GoI were also present on the occasion. Welcoming the Swachh Survekshan 2018 awardees from across the country, Smt Maya Singh said that the Swachh Bharat Mission has brought about a tremendous behavioural change in the people’s perception towards Swachhta and the challenge now is to maintain continuity in the efforts and ensure the positive change in perception of the people into an sustainable habit.
