Punjab Environment Minister Om Parkash Soni today conducted a surprise inspection at Khasa Distillery and checked various departments of the factory. Minister was informed that the factory has shut its distillation unit & boilers since long, only the bottling unit and recycling unit are working. Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) was found to be satisfactorily working but a sample of the treated water was taken by the expert team of Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) for further testing. The minister also observed the bottling operations and other operations along with the quality of the packaging materials being used.Briefing about his visit Mr. Soni said that he shall be doing surprise checks of all major industries of Punjab in order to enforce the anti pollution laws and procedures. He said that the level of environmental deteriorated and contamination has risen alarmingly causing concern. 

He informed that a sample has been taken by the PPCB team accompanying him for chemical examination, the team has also observed rest of the procedures carried out at the factory including the excise area operations the report of which shall be prepared for future reference and action if need be.Replying to a media query regarding the concerns raised by Sh. Sukhpal Singh Khaira in regard to a sugar mill, the minister said that he has asked the concerned Chief Engineer to prepare a report in reference to the allegations leveled by the opposition leader without any pressure and present it to the board. Clarifying further he added that law is supreme and it has to be followed no matter who owns the business, still the opposition must refrain from mud-slinging.
