IUST students stage protest against alleged high-handedness of forces

The students of Islamic University of Sciences and Technology (IUST) Awantipora on Thursday staged a peaceful protest demonstration against the alleged high-handedness of the government forces.The protesting students who have assembled on the varsity campus said gunshots triggered panic and that they went out of their class rooms to see what was happening.They alleged that the forces fired several tear gas shells inside the campus, which caused suffocation.Demanding action against the forces, the forces said tear gas was fired inside the campus without any provocation. A varsity official also refuted the media reports that the students pelted the forces with stones.However, the police said that the students hurled rocks at the army men fixing telephone lines outside the varsity. The army men, an official said, fired few rounds in the air to chase away the stone-throwing youth. (PTK)
