Two militants killed in Karan Nagar gunfight, police issues advisory

Two holed-up militants were killed 27 hours long encounter between security forces and militants at Karan Nagar in Srinagar today.However the identity and affiliation of the militants is yet to be ascertained, police said. However militant outfit Lashkar-Toiba has claimed the responsibility of the attack.  Police said that one militants was killed as he came out of the under construction building to get into another adjacent building adding that the other militant was trapped and killed inside the building that they took refuge in on Monday.The encounter between militants and security forces began yesterday after the militants tried to attack a CRPF camp. Meanwhile in wake of the security operation in Karan Nagar, authorities imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar to maintain law and order, a police official said.Restrictions were also imposed in eight police station areas as a precautionary measure. Police said that the curbs, under Section 144 of the CrPc, are imposed in Nowhatta, Rainawari, Khanyar, Safakadal, M R Gunj, Kralkhud, Shaheedgunj and Karan Nagar police station areas.

During that gunfight a CRPF soldier was also killed and a policeman was injured in the exchange of fire yesterday. The CRPF has claimed that it thwarted the attempt by the militants to attack its camp in Karan Nagar area.Meanwhile district administration Srinagar issued an appeal, asking people not to venture in and around the site of gunfight in Karan Nagar area of the city. “For the safety & security of the general public, it is strongly advised that they should not venture in and around the encounter site at Karan Nagar”, police said.Police added that the location has to be sanitized properly by the police & security forces to check for any residual explosive material which may be potentially life threatening. Police said, “It is therefore strongly advised that no one except authorised personnel should come close to the encounter site ( in & around ) untill it is declared safe by the police”.  (PTK)
