Shopian celebrates ‘Girl Child Day’

The district administration Shopian in collaboration with ICDS department celebrated the “Girl Child Day” in the district.Around 150 girl child that were born in the district during last two months were felicitated with a baby kit and a fancy suit. The main function was held at ICDS project Shopian which was presided by the DDC Shopian Mohammad Aijaz.  Speaking on the occasion  DDC Shopian Mohammad Aijaz said that there are several girl child related issues including female feticide, discrimination, education, nutrition and honour killings which require deep deliberations so that remedial measures could be worked   out. He said girls are making their presence felt in every field whether sports, literature, science, education or politics by the dint of their illustrious skills and talent which deserve appreciation and recognition as well. 

Similar functions were held at sub-divisional and block levels of the district.The DDC said that to make the initiative successful the concerned departments have to work in coordination and as a team. Heath, education, rural departments have to play an immense role in making this programme a grand success. He said that sex determination of the fetus is a major social evil and all those involved in such activities should be punished as per the law. He directed the health officials to strictly implement PC&PNDT Act in the district in letter and spirit.District Programme Officer ICDS Shopian Parveez Sajad said that society has to work together to remove the difficulties faced by the girl child.
