Punjab Congress president and Gurdaspur candidate Sunil Jakhar on Friday retaliated against Sukhbir Singh Badal and Vijay Sampla over their personal attacks on him, challenging them to debate serious issues instead of making frivolous statements.Starting his campaigning in the morning with a massive road show, joined by hundreds of cars and motor bikes, from village Nangal to Ghiala, Jakhar addressed a series of worker meetings in villages and city areas, where he came down heavily on the Akali and BJP leaders for raking up non-issues.Their stupid utterances showed their total desperation in the face of impending defeat for the BJP candidate Sarwan Salaria in the forthcoming election for the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat, Jakhar added, referring, in particular, to Sampla’s remarks that the PPCC president’s in-laws were living in Switzerland and that no bus goes to Abohar, the home town of Jakhar. If Sampla was serious about the welfare of Gurdaspur and its people, he should talk about what the Modi government had done for the region, which had huge untapped potential for the agro industry development, Jakhar said. People do not want to hear such irrelevant nonsense, they only want to hear about things like good health care, education, employment and essential commodities at low prices, he added.

Pointing out that some 4000 false cases had been registered in Pathankot alone during the Akali rule, Jakhar said all those found guilty would be punished. Referring to the drugs menace that the SAD-BJP combine had unleashed on Punjab, Jakhar said Chief Minister Captain Amarinder had gone all out to deliver on his promise to break the backbone of the drugs trade in just six months.Jakhar recalled that the Chief Minister had burn Chitta Ravan on Dussehra last year and announced that he was now coming to Pathankot tomorrow to celebrate the festival and tell the people that the Chitta menace had been wiped out from the state. With his development-oriented approach, Captain Amarinder had already set the pace for revival of Punjab’s economy and will bring back its hey days in the next 4.5 years, Jakhar promised the people, adding that he, with the help of the Chief Minister, would ensure that all the local issues are taken care of. The people gave their mandate to Captain Amarinder, who had, besides announcing farm loan waiver, already taken a series of decisions to promote employment generation, all round development of state and industrial development, Jakhar pointed out.

Questioning the policies of the central government, Jakhar said the same were a source of serious problems for the nation. The after-effects of demonetisation and GST would be disastrous, he said, adding that the Modi government’s failure to release GST instalment for Punjab in time was causing immense problems for the state on the fiscal front.Where is the black money that the prime minister had talked about bringing back, asked Jakhar, citing the demonetisation rationale given by Modi, while also lashing out at the central government for failing to check Pakistani infiltration despite its tall promises.Dubbing the Modi government as a government of corporates, the PPCC chief observed that with LPG prices spiking, the prime minister’s promise of `ghar ghar chulha’ has become a joke as even those who have LPG connection are finding it difficult to get LPG cylinder.Accompanying Jakhar at the meetings were Pathankot MLA Amit Vij, Ludhiana MP Ravneet Bittu, PPCC Mahila Wing President Mamta Dutta, MLA Chaudhary Nathu Ram and Punjab Youth Congress President Amarpreet Singh Lalli.
