"The legacy bestowed by the martyrs who sacrificed their lives at the altar of freedom can never be forgotten and the vast crowd gathered today at the State level function organized by the Punjab Government on the occasion of the martyrdom day of Shaheed Udham Singh, has amply proved it also." These views were expressed by the Cabinet Minister, Punjab, Mr. Sadhu Singh Dharamsot today at new anaj Mandi here during the state level function. The minister said that the future generations would always remember the immense sacrifices made by our great martyrs.Paying glowing tributes to the martyr, Mr. Dharamsot said that Shaheed Udham Singh waited for 21 years to avenge the massacre at jallianwala bagh and thus laid the foundation of the freedom of the nation.The minister exhorted the youth to draw inspiration from the sacrifices of Shaheed Udham Singh and other hallowed martyrs and take a pledge for eradication of drugs and other social evils from society. The minister also said that Shaheed Udham Singh always stood for communal harmony during the course of his foreign sojourns so as to gather and inspire people to jointly contribute towards freedom movement.The minister also divulged that the commemorative days of the martyrs are observed both nationally and internationally with equal reverence.Lashing out at the previous SAD-BJP dispensation, Mr. Dharamsot said that the tall promises made by the previous government regarding construction of a museum at Sunam in the memory of Shaheed Udham Singh have proved to be hollow. Further taking on the previous regime, he said that SAD only used the names of the martyrs for their narrow political gains and cheated the people by making a false commitment about constructing a memorial of Shaheed Udham Singh at a cost of Rs. 12 crores in 4 acre area. 

He said that he would bring the matter to the notice of the Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh sooner in order to fulfill the commitments made to the people.Earlier, addressing the people on the occasion, President, District Congress Committee Mr. Rajinder Singh Raja paid flowering tribute to the martyr. Then the Vice-President of the Punjab Youth Congress Mrs. Daman Thind Bajwa while paying homage to the martyr said that every promise made with the people of Sunam would be fulfilled by the Congress Government. On the occasion, MLA (Amargarh) Mr. Surjit Singh Dhiman and MLA (Dhuri) Mr. Dalvir Singh Goldy also paid their respects to the martyr and said that it is because of the sacrifices made by the martyrs that we are living in a free atmosphere. In his address, President, All India Youth Congress MLA Mr. Amarinder Singh Raja Warring stressed the need for each citizen to be inspired by Shaheed Udham Singh and always stand for truth and justice. He also said that the life philosophy and sacrifices of the martyrs propel us towards striving for the betterment of the society. The MLA from Sangrur Mr. Vijayinder Singla said that the youth of today's era should take inspiration from the ideologies of the martyrs and contribute towards ensuring a prosperous Punjab.

Then, the descendants of Shaheed Udham Singh were honoured by Mr. Sadhu Singh Dharamsot. On the occasion, District Congress Committee and other various NGOs also honoured the minister. Interacting with the mediapersons, the minister disclosed that in mere 4 months period, the Punjab Government has provided 8 hours un-interrupted power supply to the farmers, Power at Rs. 5 per unit to save the industrial sector, Increase in the financial assistance under pension and shagan scheme besides scores of other facilities to the people. He also said that efforts are on to increase area under forest cover in the state.Earlier, the Chief Guest Mr. Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, MLAs Vijayinder Singla, Dalvir Singh Goldy, Vice-President Youth Congress Mrs. Daman Thind Bajwa, Deputy Commissioner Mr. Amarpratap Singh Virk, SSP Mr. Mandeep Singh Sidhu laid wreaths on the martyrs memorial of Shaheed Udham Singh. Among others present on the occasion were District President Youth Congress and son of Ex-Chief Minister Bibi Rajinder Kaur Bhattal-Mr. Rahulinder Singh Sidhu, ex-minister Mr. Gurcharan Singh Dirba, senior congress leader Mr. Ajaib Singh Rataulan, Chairman Baazigar Cell Punjab Mr. Jagga Ram Dharamsot, Mr. Manjit Singh Jawandha, Mr. Khushdeep Singh Jakhepal, Poonam Kangra, Baljinder Kaur Ruby, Geeta Sharma, Mr. Ghanshyam Kansal, Mr. Balwant Singh Shergill, Additional Deputy Commissioner Mr. Upkar Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development), Mr. Rajinder Singh Batra, SDM Sunam Mr. Rajdeep Singh Brar, Assistant Commissioner Deepjot Kaur, DSP Sunam Mr. Williamjit Singh Jaijee and other dignitaries.
