Protest in Srinagar: Contractors accuse BDO of corruption

Contractors here in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district Thursday accused Block Development Officer of demanding commission for every work allotted under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).Contractors who appeared here in Press Enclave Srinagar raised slogans against incumbent BDO Ganderbal. They alleged that BDO demands commission for the payment otherwise he does not pass their bills and their payment virtually lapses. They said even works approved under MGNREGA are not allotted to those contractors who refuse to grease the palm of what they said corrupt BDO Ganderbal Shabir Ahmed Wani.“We fail to understand why he demands commission for the public works,” said protesting contractors to news agency CNS.They said that the commission system should be crushed because of this the Job Card Holders including contractors are the worst affected. Protestor alleged that they suffer a lot due to non payment under MGNREGA.“A public work approved by Director Rural Development and Assistant Commissioner Ganderbal has been allotted to a contractor. The irony is that BDO is not allowing him to start the work as the contractor has been refusing to grease his palm. We appeal authorities to look into the matter and initiate a probe. All the contractors of Ganderbal are ready to appear before the probe committee with proof,” they said.Block Development Officer, Ganderbal Shabir Ahmed Wani termed the allegations baseless. (CNS)
