Welcoming the appointment of Dr Samia Rashid as Principal Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) today hoped that she will revive the pristine glory of GMC which is in complete shambles. In a statement to KNS, President DAK Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan said that we are hopeful that newly appointed Principal will revamp GMC which is in a sorry state of affairs.GMC which was once known for its high standards is crumbling and patient care is at its lowest ebb.Patients face immense hardships and leave hospitals dissatisfied with the care they receive. They are made to wait for months for procedures and surgeries so that they are forced to see doctors in their private clinics. It is painful to see patients waiting in long serpentine queues for hours and they end up being seen by students in GMC associated hospitals as senior doctors spend most of the time in their private clinics.

Absence of senior doctors during emergency hours is responsible for high mortality among critically-ill patients.People have lost faith and trust in these crucial life-saving assets.Lack of empathy and absence of holistic care is responsible for mistrust which is the reason for deteriorating doctor-patient relationship. There are falling standards of medical education in GMC, as a result, we produce bad doctors.GMC was meant for quality research which is visibly absent and patients are treated irrationally and unscientifically. There is lobbyism and infighting among doctors which is the root cause of worsening condition in this premier health institution. We believe new principal will end the sufferings of patients and bring accountability in GMC so that work culture is inculcated and patient care is improved.
