Advising PDP led coalition government to come out of administrative inertia, CPI (M) senior leader and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami Thursday urged Mehbooba Mufti to come to the rescue of the flood hit people of Kashmir Valley. In a statement issued to KNS, he urged Chief Minister to come up to expectations of the people and live up to her promises made prior to elections. Tarigami lamented that after every rainfall the capital Srinagar city gets inundated. He said government has not learned any lesson from the past and has taken no initiative to mend the ailing drainage and sewerage system of the city. “Government must come out with some comprehensive reform plans to set the drainage system of Srinagar city on the track,” he said.

“Government is nowhere when flood threat has been looming over Kashmir. Several villages of South Kashmir particularly in Kulgam district have come under water. People need help while government is nowhere. Horticulture sector has suffered losses and it is the duty and responsibility of the government to compensate the losses incurred by people,” he said and hoped that government this time will not let down the flood hit people.Voicing concerns over incessant rains hitting farmers, Tarigami asked Chief Minister to ensure speedy damage assessment and disbursal of compensation to those affected. “farmers producing apples and other crops have suffered damages due to rain and the government must depute teams to assess the losses immediately.

"Losses suffered by farmers and orchardists should be assessed and accordingly, the compensation must be disbursed to the affected farmers without any delay," he said.He said that government boasted about the dredging process of river Jehlum. “What sort of dredging government has done? We have still been witnessing surge in waters of Jehlum and other tributaries. It is really sorry to state that the incumbent government failed to learn any lesson from the 2014 floods and didn’t take the dredging issue seriously,” he said and added that government tries to take measures when the roof leaks.Tarigami said that if the government wants to mitigate sufferings of the people, it should start translating its promises into action on ground. He urged upon the government to take care of the flood hit people and ensure the safety of their properties. “The situation on the ground seems no way different than it was during 2014 floods. The state of affairs of the peopleicularly the flood victims continues to be murky as far as the delivery of the government is concerned,” Tarigami said while urging the chief minister Mehbooba Mufti to make his government visible on the ground.
