Punjab Congress President Captain Amarinder Singh has promised the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union (PCCTU) that his government will ensure early redressal of their genuine demands once the Congress comes to power. The assurance came in response to a memorandum, signed by union president and general secretary, Dr. Mukhwinder Singh and Dr. Vinay Sophat, to apprise the PPCC president of their demands. The memorandum pointed out that while pension and gratuity benefits were being given to the teachers working in the aided colleges of almost all states of India, including the neighbouring states of Haryana and HP, college teachers in Punjab were being deprived of the same. It urged the PPCC president to ensure retirement benefits for them at par with other states. The memorandum also sought a lifting of the ban imposed on recruitments in 2005, while demanding regularisation of teaching and non-teaching staff appointed on contractual basis. The union further demanded that teachers working under unaided posts be brought into the ambit of the Punjab Affiliated Colleges Security of Service Act 1974.The union, in its memorandum, underlined the need for streamlining of DPI (Colleges) Office, in the light of reports of rampant corruption there.
