Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today appealed the people to maintain peace, harmony and brotherhood in an endeavour to make our state far more progressive and prosperous in the Country.After unfurling the national flag during the 68th Republic Day here at Government College amidst inclement weather and intense cold wave, the Chief Minister said that it was a historic occasion when the Constitution Drafting Committee headed by its founding father Dr. B.R. Ambedkar drafted and finally implemented the Indian Constitution way back on this day in 1950. The Constitution of India embodies the ethos of its sovereign, democratic and socialist character. Mr. Badal said, "I salute all those national heroes, martyrs and several unsung patriots, who made enormous contribution to make our motherland free from the shackles of British imperialism."Recalling the indomitable spirit of patriotism amongst the Punjabis, the Chief Minister said that they have inherited the spirit of self-sacrifice and patriotism from their great Gurus- Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji and Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, who made unparalled sacrifices to protect the dignity of the mankind on one hand and safeguard the human rights and religious freedom on the other hand.
Mr. Badal said, "It is on record that over 80% of supreme sacrifices made by the patriots and freedom fighters during the national freedom struggle belonged to Punjab and made all of us today really proud for this unique feat."Paying glowing tributes to the great national heroes, the Chief Minister eulogized the unprecedented sacrifice made by these great sons of the soil- Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh, Shaheed Udham Singh and Lala Lajpat Rai, who inspired the entire generation to rise against the British imperialism.On the occasion, the Chief Minister took a salute during an impressive march past from the contingents of Punjab Armed Police, Punjab Police, Punjab Women Police and NCC Cadets led by parade commander DSP Mr. Amroj Singh. Earlier, the Chief Minster also inspected the parade along with the local Deputy Commissioner and SSP.Meanwhile, the Chief Minister honoured Mr. Swarn Singh and Mr. Gurdeep Singh, both freedom fighters from village Jhajjon with a shawl and sweets. Mr. Badal also gave away prizes and mementos to the respective Platoon Commanders and the school girls, who performed the traditional Giddha and regaled the audience with their scintillating performance.Prominent amongst others who were present on the occasion included; Additional Chief Secretary to Chief Minister Mr. SK Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner Mr. DS Mangat, DIG Ropar Range Mr. Gursharan Singh Sandhu, SSP Mohali Mr. Kuldeep Singh Chahal besides several civil and police officers and dignitaries from different walks of life.
