LA panel calls for adopting effective waste management mechanism

The Committee on Environment of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly today asked the Health department to ensure installation of proper pollution control devices in the government and private hospitals of the State.The Committee, met here under the chairmanship of MLA, Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen to discuss the functioning of Health Department including the status of Bio-Medical Waste being produced by the hospitals.Legislators, Shamima Firdous, Altaf Ahmed Wani, Noor Mohammad Sheikh, Choudhary Qamar Hussain, Dr Krishan Lal, Gulzar Ahmed Wani and Anjum Fazili attended the meeting.The Committee discussed the disposal management of bio-medical and other waste alongwith the status of pollution control devices installed in the Government and private hospitals.The Committee stressed upon the concerned authorities to take necessary steps for further strengthening the health institutions by adopting effective waste management system so that a better and clean environment is provided to the patients as well as the general public.

The Committee also asked for repairing and making functional of all Bio-Medical waste management devices in the hospitals.Secretary Health & Medical Education, Dr M K Bhandari apprised the Committee about the initiatives being adopted by the Health institutions to make the hospital environment pollution free by installing color coded dustbins, needle syringe destroyers and services of sanitation workers being utilized for segregation of Bio-Medical wastes as per the prescribed norms.Among others, Chairman State Pollution Control Board, Commissioner Jammu Municipal Corporation, Director Health Jammu, Director Health Kashmir, Director Finance, H&ME, MD, NHM, Medical Superintendant SMGS, Jammu, Medical Superintendant GMC Jammu, Medical Superintendent SKIMS, and senior officers of Assembly Secretariat attended the meeting.
