Assault on legislator:Tarigami asks Speaker to initiate proceedings against erring cops

While condemning the alleged police assault on incumbent legislator Engineer Rasheed in South Kashmir, Communist Party of India (Marxist) senior leader Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami Monday appealed the Speaker Legislative Assembly Kavinder Gupta to take strong note of the incident and initiate proceedings against the erring policemen for such a shameful act.“Not speaking of common men, a legislator has become the victim of the police brutality. There are some elements in the police department that are hell-bent to bring disrepute to the whole Police Institution. Such elements need to be identified and punished under law,” Tarigam said.“We may have political difference but this is not the way to treat a legislator like this. This thrashing incident depicts the police hooliganism and is a direct attack on the democracy,” he said.Meanwhile, paying rich tribute to the founder of National Conference Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah on his birth anniversary, Tarigami has said that late Abdullah was a towering personality who spread the light of freedom, education, peace and brotherhood in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.“Some may have difference with the late leader but one can’t deny his contributions towards society. His revolutionary document ‘Naya Kashmir’ ensured decentralization, equal rights to women and free education to all. He fought for the legitimate rights of the State people and due to his efforts “Land to tillers” became a reality,” he said. (CNS)
