Banur Canal Dam Constructed In Record Time: Sharanjit Singh Dhillon

Project Worth Rs. 75 Crore Complted 2 Months Before Stipulated Time

The Banur Canal emanating from River Ghaggar from the back side of Chhat Bir Zoo has been made a perennial canal by constructing a Dam on River Ghaggar at a cost of Rs. 75 crore. Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, Irrigation Minister, Punjab disclosed this after reviewing the Irrigation projects with the Department officials here today. He said that the dam has been constructed in a record time as the project was to be completed in period of 12 months by 31st December, 2016 but the Dam construction project has been completed in a period of 10 months by 31st October, 2016. Kahan Singh Pannu, Secretary Irrigation, who supervised the Dam construction work minutely, stated that the engineers of the department worked hard to complete the project well before time. He stated that water in the Canal shall be released next month after the completion of the concrete lining of the Banur Canal.The Secretary, Irrigation further detailed that the project aims to irrigate 40000 acres of land in 61 Villages thereby benefitting about ten thousand families engaged in the farming sector. The project also ensures continuous supply of water to the farmers lifiting the water from River Ghaggar downstream of the Dam site. He also expressed strong hope that the project would mitigate the problem faced by the farming community of the region as the underground water level in this area had gone as deep as 400 feet with water quality of underground water also not good for growing crops.
