Bhalswa landfill major contributor of air pollution: Satyendar Jain

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Saturday inspected Bhalswa landfill and said the dumping site is one of the major contributor of air pollution in the national capital."Bhalswa landfill, used to dump the garbage, is often on fire. We need to douse it," Jain said."This landfill is the major contributor to air pollution, where piled up garbage are often on fire. If you see here, there are some places where certain spots are still burning," the minister told reporters.The minister said the Delhi government and civic bodies are jointly working out a plan to dispose excess garbage and douse flames."Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has asked 15 to 20 days to douse the fire," Jain said.The government is also considering to use 50 to 60 per cent of garbage for road construction and rest would be utilised in waste energy plant, in this way dumping site can also be cleaned, he said.He termed the pollution as a critical problem which need to be immediately curbed.North Delhi's Bhalswa landfill site is spread over 21 acres and was commissioned in 1994. It receives about 2,700 tonnes of garbage everyday.
