Kashmir shutdown enters day 117th, dozens hurt in clashes across Valley

A complete shutdown amid massive clashes including in summer capital was observed across Kashmir on day 117th of the ongoing uprising. During the day, dozens of persons, mostly government forces men including two officers, were injured.

According to GNS correspondent, massive clashes erupted at Anchar area of Jinab Sahab Soura here after police and forces conducted a raid inside the neighborhood to arrest youths involved in pro-freedom protests. However, according to witnesses, locals including women came out of their houses and resisted against the forces, sparking off massive clashes.

During the clashes, police used teargas, pepper gas and pellets against the stone-throwers. The clashes spread to adjoining 90 feet Soura and Malik Sahab. Hundreds of people in these areas came out of their houses and staged pro-freedom and anti-India protests. The area remained tense throughout the day amid clashes.

According to a police spokesman, ‘miscreants’ in large number pelted stones heavily upon the deployments at Anchar Soura in district Srinagar resulting in the grievous injuries to SP Hazratbal and 35 other police and security forces personnel.

“While dealing with the law and order in the area, three civilians who were part of the mob also sustained injuries,” he said, adding that they were shifted to SKIMS Soura for treatment. The condition of all of them is stated to be stable while filing this report, he added. As the clashes were underway in the, a house reportedly caught in fire at Malik Sahab due to teargas shell. However, police didn’t confirm the incident.In Old City, hundreds of forces men were deployed in five police station areas of Srinagar’s Old City – MR Gunj, Nowhatta, Safa Kadal, Rainwari and Khanyar – since early morning. There was however civilian movement without any disruption in all these areas. In Civil Lines and uptown area of the Srinagar, the routine movement of private transport and pedestrians was once again seen since early morning but all the shops, commercial establishments and educational institutes were closed.

In the evening hours, clashes erupted at Bohri Kadal, Safa Kadal and Rajouri Kadal areas of Old City between youths and government forces. Police fired several teargas canisters towards protesters and the shops despite Hurriyat deal remained closed in these areas. Reports of shutdown were also received from all other districts of the Valley.The clashes were reported from Pulwama, Shopian, Hygam in Baramulla and Anantnag. Detailing the situation, a police spokesman said: “The situation across the valley remained under control barring six incidents of law & order which took place during the day. In district Shopian, miscreants pelted stones upon police and security forces deployments at Dachoo, Rabben, Nagbal and Sugan. Police chased them away by using mild force.“In Tarzoo, Sopore, miscreants in order to disrupt the normal life, pelted stones upon police and security forces deployment but were chased away. While dealing with the law & order situation, DySP PC Sopore got injured and was shifted to Sub District Hospital Sopore for treatment.” (GNS)
