Day 82:Police foil freedom march in many parts

Curfew and severe restrictions were imposed in different parts of Kashmir Valley on Wednesday in wake of separatists call for freedom march. Life was crippled for the 82nd consecutive day due to curbs and shutdown that started shortly after the killing of Hizb poster boy Burhan Muzaffar Wani who was killed in an encounter with government forces on 8 July this year.All the business establishments, schools, colleges and public transport remained shut while skeletal movement of private vehicles was witnessed in Civil Lines areas of Srinagar city including Lal Chowk, Jawahar Nagar, Raj Bagh, Dalgate and Sonawar.Reports from South Kashmir said that Curfew was imposed in Koimoh town of south Kashmir's Kulgam district in view of the separatists call for a march, while restrictions on the assembly of people continued in the rest of the Valley.

A police official said the curbs in the town were imposed as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order in the wake of the separatists call for a march to the area.The separatists, who are spearheading the current agitation in Kashmir, had asked people to march to various tehsil headquarters, including Koimoh.

Curfew-like restrictions were imposed in Wakura area of Ganderbal in central Kashmir to prevent a march called by resistance leadership. However, forces deployed in strength in the area imposed restrictions to curtail the movement of people. Clashes had erupted in the area last evening following the arrests of four youths. Curfew was also imposed in Khag village of central Kashmir’s Budgam district to foil the freedom march. Contingents of army, police and CRPF had been deployed in the area to foil the proposed “Khag chalo’. Witnesses told news agency CNS that people from adjacent villages of Khag including Poshkar, Aripanthan, Beerwah, Sarash, Drang, Shungalpora, Gogaldar were stopped to march towards Khag.Meanwhile, clashes erupted in Hajin near Khankah Masjid after government forces foiled "Hajin Chalo" and vandalised the venue of a proposed rally at main chowk.Huge contingent of police and paramilitary forces had been deployed in Hajin town.Forces fired a number of teargas shells to disperse the protesters, triggering clashes.A police official said that situation remained peaceful throughout Valley and no untoward incident of violence was reported from any part of Kashmir.
