Day 75; curfew, shutdown continues in Kashmir

Curfew, restrictions and shutdown continued on 76th straight day on Thursday in Kashmir while the reports of clashes and protests were reported in couple of areas throughout the day.A top police official told KNS that curfew and restrictions were imposed in Anantnag, parts of Srinagar to foil the march called by separatist leadership today.Eye-witnesses said that large contingent of forces were deployed on roads and streets leading towards Rajbagh, and other uptown areas.However, besides, deployment of forces in the uptown areas, up town and other adjoining areas witnessed a brisk movement of private and government vehicles during the day. Meanwhile, reports said that in view of the call given by the separatist leadership, the authorities imposed curfew in south Kashmir's Anantnag town. “Strict curfew was today imposed in Anantnag town while the people were not allowed to venture out of their homes,” local sources told KNS.Meanwhile, local sources told KNS that clashes erupted between youth and forces in Bijbehara area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district while scores of vehicles were damaged by the youth in the area.“The youth took to streets in the late hours today and ransacked windowpanes of vehicles and started pelting stones on forces at Goriwan area,” local sources said, adding that forces used tear gas canisters to disperse the agitating youth.

Besides clashes, a complete shutdown was today observed in South Kashmir to protest against the civilian killings in Kashmir.Similar situation was reported in central Kashmir areas while a brisk movement of traffic was witnesses in uptown areas and in commercial hub Lal Chowk.Besides curfew in parts of Srinagar and huge deployment in uptown areas, clashes erupted between youth and forces in Habba Kadal, Fateh Kadal area of Srinagar’s old city.Report quoting locals said the youth while shouting pro-freedom and anti-Indian slogans took to streets and started pelting stone on forces.Meanwhile, reports said that pro-freedom songs and slogans were reverberating in local Masjid’s in downtown areas of Srinagar during the day.Local sources told KNS that clashes erupted between youth and forces in interiors of Saki Dafar, Eidgah area of Srinagar during which forces used tear gas canisters to disperse the youth who were pelting stones on them.
