On the completion of 27 years of the infamous ‘Operation Jamia Masjid’, Hurriyat (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Thursday said that since the peoples uprising more than two decades ago desecration of religious places especially Masjids is used as a means to deliberately hurt peoples sentiments, demoralize them and as a policy of revenge against them for daring to stand up against their illegal occupation.Mirwaiz in a statement issued to KNS said Jamia Masjid Srinagar is the most powerful symbol of Kashmirs resistance movement, earlier against the Dogra rule and after 1947 against the Indian occupation. From its pulpit voice for justice and fulfillment of peoples political will and aspirations has always been raised even in the harshest of circumstances and that is why it is the most targeted by the authorities that be.

The Mirwaiz, said,27 years back, the ruling class, desecrated Jamia Masjid Srinagar under ‘Operation Jamia Masjid’ to try to silence Shaheed-e-Millat Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq from raising his voice against oppression of Kashmiris just like they had attempted earlier in 1965 but had failed even then. For a bold and fearless leader like the late Mirwaiz could not be cowed down by such tactics. He said since then, the desecration of other religious places continues including Dargah Hazratbal, Chrar-e-Sharief, Khanqah-e-Faiz Panah Tral, Dastgeer Sahab shrine and now even religious places of Sikhs including their prominent Gurdwaras were being desecrated.Appealing people to follow the programmes given by the unified resistance leaders in letter and spirit, the Mirwaiz urged them to make the ‘Eidgah Chalo’ programme a success with discipline and unity.Meanwhile, a Hurriyat spokesman condemned the raids by Police at the APHC Headquarters at Rajbagh for the third time and said this was only being done to harass the APHC Chairman, conglomerate’s leaders, office bearers and workers.
