Priya Sethi launches Mega Plantation Drive

Says afforestation vital to contain disastrous effects of global warming

Minister of State for Education, Technical Education, Culture, Tourism, Department of Horticulture, Floriculture and Parks Priya Sethi today took part in the Van Mahotsav celebrations and launched a Mega Plantation Drive at Govt College of Education.The event was organised in collaboration with M/s Samaya and NSS unit of the College as part of plantation drive launched by Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) in the winter capital.Under the five day Mega Plantation Drive,   JMC has set a target to plant 10,000 saplings at various educational institutions by students, faculty members and local people under the campaign  ‘Each One Plant One’ with the planter taking the charge of the sapling and ensuring its care.    The saplings have been provided by Social Forestry department.Priya Sethi planted a sapling in the premises of the college and took an oath to raise awareness on the pressing issue of global warming.Speaking on the occasion, Priya Sethi said that prevention of deforestation and promotion of afforestation are the basic strategies that can be employed to save planet earth from the disastrous effects of global warming.

“We have to take it upon ourselves to help bring a change for the good of our planet and life here”, she asserted adding “Not individuals but whole human race has to contribute in tackling the current climatic crisis. The burden to determine the future of humanity rests on entire mankind alike”.

Sharing concern over deteriorating climatic conditions, she said that last year was the hottest year on record and average temperature has already increased by almost 1 degree Celsius.“Gradual rise in  global surface temperatures, instability in the monsoon rainfall, the changing trends in the frequency and magnitude of rain fall, constant rise in sea level  are but a few examples of how human race is slowly endangering the future of our planet” she said .Priya Sethi congratulated the organisers on taking up this initiative in educational institutions across Jammu, saying that children and educators can play a vital role in taking forward the campaign and achieve desirable results.Joint Commissioner JMC R S Jamwal, Assistant Commissioner (Revenue) JMC Subah Mehta and Principal Prof (Dr) Kaushal Smotra along with faculty and students were also present on the occasion.
